The 19-year-old, brother of Manchester United and England striker Wayne, will spend a few days with Nigel Clough's squad this week.
He could feature for the Rams in a reserve-team fixture against Sheffield United on Wednesday.
Rooney has made 38 first-team appearances for Macclesfield scoring four goals.
